Renaissance Man

Renaissance Man is popping up all over the shop in mixtapes and DJ sets at the moment and thats fine with me. The Finnish double act have a pounding technoey vibe that has real pack-it-to-the-rafters-and-get-sweaty club feel.

You can catch the finnish duo playing with Casper C at Blogger Delight shindig at the lock tav on the 8th Nov. Yeah its free aswell, so no excuses pls.

The Sharkslayer bonus remix puts a bit more wiggle into the tune - with the bassline sliding around your speakers nicely:

Joker & Ginz - Purple City

Booming dub from Joker, who is the man-to-be in the UK dubstep right now. The young Bristolian, who teamed up with Ginz on this one, seems to keep very distant from the kill yer grandma dubby nastiness that's been doing the rounds at most club nights you might have been to recently. For dubheads, im sure they'll say thats a good thing.

His 12" can be picked up at Chemical records.

Roy Davis Jr. feat Peven Everett - Gabriel

Remember this little beaut? This Roy Davis Jr classic reminds me of when garage was massive in the UK and Craig David was the man-of-the-hour...

The chilled jazzy beats of 'Gabriel' groove effortlessly underneath Peven Everett's hypnotic vocals in this 1998 house classic.

Fever Ray - Triangle Walks (Rex The Dog Edit)

You know Fever Ray right? The solo project of super awesome Karin Dreijer Andersson from The Knife. Not only is this album amazing as a stand alone cd... There are some BIG remixes being churned out at the moment, including this driving techno stomper from Rex the Dog. Plenty of phaser-esque swirls, pops and jittery drum hits over the clean, throbbing synth.

Boltan Mightyfools Remix

Feeling a bit peeky after a large weekend, but this whompy-jigglyness of Mightyfools has sorted me right out. The Potty Mouth funsters have got involved with Boltans 'Creepy' and jam-packed it full of bass.

Primavera Sound 09'

This weekend was spent in the awesome sun of Barcelona, where i was buggin' out at the Primavera Sound festival. Having gone for the full three day ticket I saw a variety of acts i 'should' have heard, but havent, which made it all the better.

The festival itself was hosted around a sea-side location of Barca, which is usually used for similar events; art installations, gigs and various other functions, and the heavily concreted area added a really 'urban' feel to the festival. The main stages included Rockdelux; a stage which was set in an amphitheatre, the larger Estrella sponsored main stage, a more confined 'ATP' stage and various smaller unplugged tents. These stages gave a good mix of atmosphere and sound for varying acts, from bigger dance acts through to smaller Spanish bands and singer/songwriters.

Some highlights from the festival had to be (in no particular order):

Feadz - The Ed Banger boy who played on the Pitchfork stage on Friday. The set was upbeat, jittery electro, which raised my spirits. He also shared the set with a Scandinavian looking guy called Jackson. Enlighten me to who he is anyone??..... I'm sure im being stupid..

However, the set, which was a light relief to a long days worth of bands, got people moving.

Feadz - B Run That
/ alt

Bloc Party - Played an earlier set on the Friday over at the Estrella stage and played a pretty strong set of mainly Silent Alarm tracks, with a few newies in there to mix things up.

Although the set was somewhat on the safe side (ie: everyone recognised all the songs), the crowd seemed to relish the energetic indie numbers. Kele seemed comfortable on the big stage and picked up the pace of listeners with his jumpy guitar riffs.

Bloc Party - Ares (Villains Remix)
/alt

Aphex Twin - Although the king of 'IDM' looked a little lonely at the center of the Rockdelux stage, he filled the amphitheatre's space with deep, weird and bleepy sounds, mixing technoey stuff with pulsing bass and other indescribable sounds. The backdrop to his set was colourful and mesmerising visuals which looped and juddered around his DJing station and across the stage.

Probably a bit off the wall for a casual listener, but without a doubt he played a curiousity inducing, varied and atmospheric electronic set.

Aphex Twin - Windowlicker
/ alt

A-Trak - Probably my favourite DJ set of the festival and getting the Pitchfork stage slot just before his hombre DJ Mehdi, A-trak worked us up with wobbly, grimey tracks and juggled beats from the likes of Herve, Laidback Luke, Daft Punk and Boys Noize.

The canadian turntablist mixed a electro heavy, distorted set in his usual calm and collected way, with classics like the classic 'Robot Rock' beat-juggled to maximum effect. He also threw in a few bass heavy numbers like Jack Beats 'Drop the Pressure' remix, which was unexpected, but awesome none-the-less. Ravers got a little bit confused through some of the beat juggling bits, but he quickly got people back onto his side with some slick mix outs and big crowd friendly drops.

A-Trak & Laidback Luke - Shake it Down / alt

Gang Gang Dance - An entirely new discovery for me, who i liked from the off. The singer, who had a hint of Bjork about her played drums, alongside a healthy layer of electronic keyboard and guitar jabs to compliment her floaty, echoey vocals.

Was slightly concerned at the mystery guy who sat on the stage pretty much in front of the guitar player throughout the performance through - it was pretty distracting. Other than that, a really great set.

Gang Gang Dance - First Communion (TV on the Radio Remix) / alt

To some up the Primavera Sound festival, it would be - awesome weather, a good variety of music, muchos cervezas and oh yeah... getting to see Neil Young's mullet. Happy days.

Hostage drinks Special Brew

Got back from primavera festival in Barcelona, a wicked mix of all sorts of things (DEF NOT SPECIAL BREW). A post to follow soon on that.

To tide you over until then, some new heat from my main man Hostage, who is on a bass wobbling rampage yet again. Im trying to persuade him to do a mini mix for me at the moment, so may have to send his some mini cheddars or an equivalent tasty snack for the priviledge.

Boy Crisis + Run Hide Survive Remix

With their highly successful night 'Club Pony' to run, and a deluge of production work to keep up with, the Run Hide Survive boys seem to create a mini flurry of excitement around every new release. Sheffield seems to have created its own microcosm of electro in recent years, which is rather northern in essence - unpretentious, friendly and definately 'up for it'. This feel is carried through into the remix of the Boy Crisis tune 'L'Homme'.

The next '& Down' it is not, but it doesn't try, or indeed want to be. Mike, from RHS even mentions his love for disco as being a driving factor of many of his sets at Club Pony. This latest remix would easily fit into a range of electro sets, without having to blow peoples ear off to get the attention of the crowd.

I first heard the RHS boys via their massive hoover-y beast that is 'Dyson', however it was a shame less was done with the track back in 07' when distorted bangers were the flavour of the month. So naturally, I was delighted when something a little more intricate came my way. This new remix takes a more 'intelligent' slant towards danceable electro, with a subdued darker beat, smooth buildup and a swelling technoey vibe. The remix is rounded off nicely with interweaved indie vocals from Boy Crisis, with a bleep here and a smidge of piano there.

Im glad that RHS have moved with the times and developed their sound along the way. I still crave that in your face synth every now and again, but this song is more thoughtful and hits all the right spots.

Although its still a while before i think Run Hide Survive hit the 'big time', a strong reputation up north and a consistent level of quality releases like this will make that journey a whole lot easier. Its just a shame they are so damn busy we don't get to hear more.

Major Operated Lazer Coin Boy

Im feeling a little overwhelmed by the Major Lazer remixes flooding in right now, but seeing as this one is rather funky, you should get involved.

Coin Operated Boy is a lad from Sheffield, close to my roots and all that. He produces 'meaty beats and pimpy synths' which sums up this remix of 'Hold the Line'.

The ragga vibes are stripped away and the track reverts back to classic electro sylings, with metalic synthy stabs, crispy drum beats and slowed down, more rhythmic vocals.

Enjoy the sun while you can. It wont last

You know the weather is picking up when you see scantily clad men and women sunning themselves around town. It's a good thing in most cases, until you see a guy in sandals, socks and some swimming trunks... WTF?! Its not THAT hot.

So while the good weather lasts, sit back, relax and enjoy the smooth grooves of a Marvin Gaye classic covered in a jittery sunny way by the awesome Hot Chip:

Dizzee + Doorly

Doorly... hes a nutter from up north that has his fingers in a number of rather cheeky pies. Hes involved in all sorts of things including Wax:on and the Afterparty in huddersfield.

Considering he was one of Pete Tong's upcoming 'in new DJ's we trust' picks, a remix of his combining Dizzee with a smattering of dubstep is always going to be worth a listen.

Divebomb (Mumdance Carnival Remix)

After a few tweets here and a few nudges there, Mumdance has got round to sending me some of his new remix work. Seeing as its amazingly warm and sunny in London today, its only fit that this liveley, 'does what it says on the tin' carnival remix of indie rockers, The Whip's 'Divebomb', gets a bit of airtime.

Mumdance, the young brit, who will be joining the Unifest lineup in Brighton, on April 25th, amongst a smattering of other awesome line-ups, including DJ sets with Ed Banger boys and the Mad Decent crew shows he is getting some serious attention in 09'.

With cheeky 90's influenced synth jabs, and juttery, chopped up samples working its way around a more sprightly, heavily drum laden main riff, this remix will sureley get some spring mixtape love.

Elephant Man

And for another regular installment of Hostage fun. This time round, things have gone a bit stranger, darker and dubbier. This isn't to say Hostage's trademark jump up wiggly basslines have been forgotten.

Instead, Hostage goes for grubby and it works like a charm. Bit concerned about the photoshop work though Alan.. your head must be a dark dark place.

Esser - Work It Out Remixes

I can see Esser getting some attention in 09. He seems to have a pretty hectic myspace schedule - drop by and give him some love. His 'work it out track' feels like a retro version of a Lily Allen song (take that as you will):

I much prefer the Jaymo mix however. (teaser):

Scotty on Twitter

Join me on Twitter! Like a number of my fave people and blogs - I have quietly been Twittering away for some time now. Like those frustrating mini-flash games you dont know why you do it - you just do.

Twitter is basically 'micro blogging', you send out short messages to people that follow you - Think facebook status updates, but better. Find me @scottynaispas - peace !

Beni Bidi Bici

Beni seems have a much lower profile than he should. I dont know why, but he is very underated and seems to have a lot of talent.

As you may already knpw, Beni is formerly of Riot in Belgium, who made some seriously pumped up electro tunes in 2007 (think La Musique for a starter...) Beni has since released his latest discoey house stomper 'My love sees you' a good while back on french label bigwigs, Kitsune.

I do really like the original, a funky number, with slap bass, housey vocals and cheeky electro chunks which squeak over a groovy bassline. The Etienne de Crecy remix however is a fair bit different, but really floats my boat. Its an electro-come-techno hybrid of a track which builds up in a similar way to Yukseks rather large Del Adeu track, but drops into a filter heavy technoey bassline.

Government Petition Hoax Shitebags

I dont know if you got this message through Facebook, forums whatever a good while back... If you didn't, basically there was this big hoo ha about the government trying to introduce a bill to reduce sound in nightclubs. Not good. However today, i get this e-mail :

So basically i got duped into signing some government petition for no reason - not wanting to be para or anything: but how the fuck can stuff like this just happen? Has someone deliberately just set this whole thing up to waste peoples time...?

Anyway.. on the upside, we can still play loud music in clubs - yay! To celebrate this glorious day enjoy Modeselektors loudest of loud spasm inducer:

Keith + Supabeatz

Now that Italy is officially on the wonky house map, im sure its just a matter of time before more of the nations producers get some blog coverage. 'Keith' from Hypotron records is a new one for me, with funky jacked up beats and a remix catalogue of everything from fidget, jungley stuff through to unusual and darker techno sounds. Keith has already gained some interest from DJs like french party starter Don Rimini and the hotly tipped Mustard Pimp's, so keep your eyes and ears peeled.

Keith (aka Marco Palazzo) also teams up with fellow Italian Supabeatz on this crackin' remix of Franz Ferdinand's 'Ulysses', which as it happens won the offical Beatport remix competition set up by Domino Records. Felicitazione !!

Royksopp - Happy Up Here

The new Royksopp album 'Junior' is going to be a big dance album for 09, i enjoy their upbeat, poppy electronica ways (especially their first album Melody A.M). They have started things off with the release of their first single 'Happy Up Here', which has been given the remix treatment from Boys Noize, Breakbot and Datasette.

Boys Noize keeps it dark and stompy, Breakbot goes for light and chirpy and Datasette's is chilled and floaty.

Mustard Pimps

The Mustard pimps seem to have slipped me by, not on purpose, just one of those things. Luckily for us, they have added me to their promo list and dropped some new tracks. If you havent heard them before you might be slightly weirded out at first - Take a listen to their track "Gold" if you don't know what i mean.

Rubik is no better; a strange, evil, childrens TV theme tune gone wrong:

Mustard Pimp - Rubik / YSI

The remix of Mo Do's "Ein, Zwei, Polizei" Is a more conventional banger with added German military vocals, which i love:

Mo Do - Eins Zwei Polizei (Mustard Pimp Remix) / YSI

Let it Snow

Snow has landed in a big way and London is officially on lockdown today. Buses, trains, tubes, everything has grinded to an abrupt halt, and i seem to be one of the few idiots that turned up to work anyway.

In a 'snow' related theme, check out Miike Snow's (har har) 'Burial' remixed by Ed bangers very own DJ Mehdi. The track is a slower, funkier number with soothing piano riffs and the odd bit of gentle slap bass to brighten up the main riffs.

A Noob on the scene

France's very own Noob is moving in all of the right circles right now, with some high profile remix work and a deep, driving production style. The Brodinski remix is a head mangler of track, which sways to and fro, twisting up and around your speakers. Noobs remix of Popofs 'Serenity' on the other hand, is a clubbier track with uplifting build-ups and progressive, orchestral riffs.

Scuba - Twitch (Jamie Vexed Remix)

Having got the word from Mumdance's Tweet i looked up this incredible Jamie Vexd remix of Scuba's 'Twitch' . The track is a slow roller with distinct Madlib / J Dilla-esque sounds consisting of broken vocal loops, deconstructed twitchy drums and soaring, yet deep bass.

Volatile

After following up a recommendation from the awesome interview with Hostage, i got in contact with Volatile - the grimey electro / techno producers that have started to receive some radio play and blog love. I'm going to try and initiate the band wagon and get things rolling for them. First things first, check out their Myspace page and get them on your friends list. Second, download these tracks that they kindly sent over and get listening.

Their sound brings the term 'Apocolyptic techno' to mind, with huge whomping techno beats, air raid sirens and grizzly basslines fueling these grimey tracks. Its good to get the heads up on new talent, and Volatile definately have something good going on.

Don Diablo + The Ting Tings

Im not usually a fan of mashups, there a bit circa 2002, but Don Diablo's label sent over a few of his latest efforts, with my favourite being the Ting Tings 'Thats not my name' vs his own squeaky bassline from his Rave Rave Rave tune. Definately danceable:

Only The Cool Kids eat Chewy Chocolate Cookies

The Chewy Chocolate Cookies are coming up in the world. They seem to be quietly churning out respectable remixes and I have just been emailed their remix of The Cool Kids "88". Give it a taste, let me know what you think of the crunky bits ;-)

Jack Beats - It's the future, i've heard it

I know 2009 is going to be pretty big for 'electro' and i use that term quite loosely as the electro 'scene' can't easily be pinned down to a certain artist or sound that easily any more. The stuff that i like, and is being played around alot is taking samples from all different music styles including old school acid house, rock, techno, dubstep, reggae, bassline to name just a few. 2009 will see us being more exposed to these 'hybrid-tunes' that incorporate the best bits from some or all of these styles.

Im not a member of the 'genre police', but just love the way a sound will come and go having taken bits from others, to make something new. Jack Beats, in my opinion seem do this extremely well with a killer lineup of one part Scratch Pervert and one part Mixologist. With a well established history of music production and DJing experience between them, luckily they turned their hand to making a few club friendly electro-hybrid bangers:

Project Bassline - Drop The Pressure (Jack Beats Rinsed Out Rave Remix) / Y.S.I

White Williams - Violator (Jack Beats Remix) / Y.S.I

More Hostage Fun

Seeing as Hostage and I are now bestest of friends, he sent through one of his latest tracks. Think splodgy(?) electro with a tinge of old school breakbeat. Nice.

Tiga - Mind Dimension Remixes

Because this song has been stuck in my head for some time now it needs to be posted. This song from Tiga has been much abused in the clubs and for the very reason and its ridiculously heavy, with its buzzing synth, at times squirrel vocals and only the slightest smattering of a drum beat. To give the track a new lease of life i present to thee the original gangster and a couple of cheeky bonus remixes:

Tiga - Mind Dimension 2 / (Y.S.I)

One from Gingy which has alot more bounce:

Tiga - Mind Dimension (Gingy Re-edit) / (Y.S.I)

And the other from NT89 & Shinichi Osawa which is a touch grittier than the original:

The Duke Rocks It

Mr. Oizo and Duke dumont were pretty awesome on friday - Mr Oizo stunned and surprised with his usual concoction of uber cool-ness and random everything goes playlists. Nelly Furtado - Maneater followed by some DnB anyone? I was kind of upset he actually learn to mix since i last saw him - i thought 'not mixing' was the new mixing?

Duke Dumont was much pretty jackin techno all night long, which was good because i was let down by his set last time - but got the right vibe this time. I didnt know much of it but recognised a bit of Popof and Style of Eye, which rocked the place considering it was filled to only half capacity.
